Soon upon his return, Verdi married Barezzi's daughter Margherita, and the couple had two children, Virginia Maria Luigia and Icilio Romano. Feeling confined by the limitations of Busseto, Verdi moved the family to Milan where his first opera Oberto opened at La Scala in 1839. Embittered by this setback, and still reeling over the closely spaced deaths of his only two children (Virginia on 12 August 1838 and Icilio Romano on 22 October 1839) and his first wife (Margherita on 18 June 1840), Verdi allegedly resolved to quit composing (though he continued to participate in Milan's musical life, rewriting portions of Oberto and overseeing rehearsals of the work) In October 1839, their second child, Verdi Icilio Romano, also died in infancy. On June 18, 1840, the debut of his second opera was painfully overshadowed by the death of Margherita, who was just 26 years old. Verdi made over 25 operas during his career.
